Group Therapy

“The need to be closely related to others is as basic as any biological need and is, in the light of the prolonged period of helpless infancy, equally necessary to survival.”

Yalom

Group dance movement therapy has many benefits, being in a group gives you the chance to feel relational safety, a felt sense of being safe within relationships, you can gain a sense of being seen and understood, members support each other and relate to each other. Individual needs are recognised and we can celebrate our differences and our similarities. The group become a safe container in which members can safety explore their relationship to themselves, their bodies, and each other and the wider environment. Members can support each other to find there creative voice and express themselves freely.

In DMP group sessions, we will often begin with a verbal/movement check-in, followed by a group warm-up, sessions may involve movement exploration around specific themes (individually, in pairs, or as a group), there is always time for verbal reflection to greater understand what was experienced in the movement , and we close with a group ending movement ritual. Sessions may include: Creative movement, movement meditations, the use of props to facilitate movement experiences, vocalizing, mirroring explorations to foster empathy, the use of music or rhythmical group dances, and group discussions.

This was life changing experience for me. expressing myself through inner and outer worlds through movement and movement metaphor was so valuable to me. the whole environment felt totally safe and supportive which was so important.

Katy is a wonderful person, therapist and teacher. she put so much thought into every session and cater to our needs as individuals and as a group. It was a beautiful experience.

The dance movement therapy group has put me more in touch with my body and how it links to my mind. I was experiencing a stuck emotion and the movement and dance helped me express and release this. I felt validated and listened to and it felt empowering.

This was so cleverly put together and katy was very sensitive and respectful group therapist.

I am now able to take up more space with my body, to feel more compassionate towards myself, more centered, more mindful and more expressive.
